Mum thanked the security guard who'd brought her up to Sean's room. "Thank you luv. Give your wife my best. And for the tenth time, if she tells you she wants to make love then believe her. Heavens you men think women go to pieces when we're pregnant."
He blushed and left her just as she winked at him. Knocking the door, she braced herself to override any objections from her Harry.

He did something pretty much everyone he knows thinks was incredibly dumb, and got yelled at by a bunch of people, and then there comes along one more person he thought was going to yell only they didn't and he was all boggly for a bit. Of course, the identity of the one person who didn't yell wasn't quite as significant as it was with Johnny, but still, I found myself flashing back a bit to that set of scenes in Johnny's story when I read this. :) I could really feel for Harry, that lost, lonely feeling came through very clearly. Good stuff, hon. [hugz]

Date: 2005-04-20 02:55 pm (UTC)You know I disagree with you on this, since we already talked about it YM, but I'll state it again for the rest of the class. I recognize that there is a parallel in terms of the events, some people angry, some people taking it more calmly, but the events themselves, in my opinion, do not compare. At all.
Harry broke up with his lover because he thought Orlando deserved better and because he believed that James and Orlando were in love. The decision to walk out the door was made quickly, but he had been feeling like he wasn't the man for Orlando for, oh, pretty much a year. And he'd been getting to know James, there had been tension and arguments between him and Orlando happening leading up to it. This wasn't completely out of the clear blue sky. He'd been having suspicions and doubts for a bit about there being something wrong, something off with Orlando. Just like there were before he broke up with Karl, most of which he only saw in hindsight. No, he didn't wait to find out what Orlando really felt, because he didn't trust that Orlando could make that decision with him in the picture, and because he refused to put himself in the position of being left again.
Harry didn't get yelled at by a lot of people- he got yelled at by Dominic. That was it. Sean disagreed with him, but said it once, and then just supported his friend. Elijah started feeding him. Marton was kind to him, other then threatening him and telling him not to Royal him. Christian was supportive and made it clear that the friendship went on, even Johnny only got a bit tetchy about the Orlando aspect. He was worried about Mum because he and Dominic had fought, and because she's Mum- if anyone was going to lecture him, he was afraid it might be her. And until Anna recently, Mum is the only female of influence in Harry's life, and she has been for a long time, through an awful lot of stuff. Decades worth of history and stuff there. I would argue that Mum coming in and supporting Harry the way she did was at least as significant as Christian. He is Johnny's lover and Johnny's love- his opinion is crucial and key, but so is Mum's to Harry. She's Harry's family- has been almost as long as Sean has.
Harry made a mistake, and he was wrong. He should have talked to Orlando. But there were massive self esteem and Karl-history issues weighing in on top of this that made it difficult for him to be able to do that. More importantly- how do you fight to keep the one you love when you truly feel you're not the one for him. As I've said later- Harry needed to be chosen- as selfish as it was, and as much as he should be able to just go on faith and Orlando's word that he loved him, he needed to be selected, not just defaulted to. But his choice was a mature one. The fact that he was wrong doesn't make it an immature choice. He stepped back to let Orlando make his choice to go to James, which he assumed he would do with him out of the picture. It never occurred to him that Orlando would chose him over James, because he felt that James was the obvious and right person for Orlando to be with. But although it was an impulsive decision, at the time, if he'd thought about it for an hour, a day, a week- he would have still made the same choice.
Johnny was attacked by an angry, violent kid who was beating the snot out of him, and instead of calling for help or fighting back, he let Linus beat the absolute snot out of him, even when it looked like the attack was going to become sexually violent because he thought there was a chance it would be helpful for Linus. There is self sacrifice, there is martyrdom, and there is self abuse.
Also? Despite the words and opinions of others, I don't think Johnny thinks he did anything all that wrong. Harry has been able to recognize where things went wrong, and, to a degree, the reasons why. So- to make a long story... less long? Yeah, I disagree.
