Liam never slept very soundly when there were patients at the house. And since becoming a therapist he'd gotten into the habit of leaving his empathic senses open all the time. Not extended, not seeking, but receptive. He hadn't maintained regular shields in decades -- hadn't really needed them much at Palace -- and around patients who might suffer nightmares, experience flashbacks, or even turn predatory, closing himself off could be downright dangerous.
