Eric sat bolt upright as he read the message on his com, quickly typing a reply before grabbing his things and leaving the room.
Sit tight; I'm on my way down...
He arrived at Amy’s room quickly, knocking sharply on the door hoping that she would be in. He stuffed his hands in his pocket nervously, not sure about what state he would find her in. As the door opened his heart sank a little; Amy looked as if she’d been crying her eyes out, her face puffy and swollen, her eyes bloodshot. He grabbed hold of her quickly, enveloping her in a tight hug, letting go quickly, worried that perhaps that was not the right thing to do.
As Eric pulled her tight she leaned her face against his shoulder and begin to cry heavily. She liked being held, it made her feel safe. Though safe from what or whom she didn’t know. After a few moments she pulled away. “I’m sorry.” She says trying to re-catch her breath as she wipes her eyes. “I, I had a nightmare, well more like a vision. I think, I don’t know. Please come in I need to talk about it.” Eric enters the room and watches Amy walk over to the bed and sit down. “Please sit next to me. Please.” She asks tears starting to reform in her eyes.
Eric sat down and wrapped his arms around the girl once more, letting her tears fall, just comforting her as best he good. He pulled her into him and kissed her hair muttering “Ssshh… it’s alright, its ok,” quietly and soothing as he held her.
When her breathing had started to calm a little, he looked down at her and asked, “So what kind of a nightmare was it… they can’t hurt you, it was only a dream.”
Amy looked up at Eric’s face. “It seemed so real. There was blood, blood everywhere. They were after me, screaming my name.” She closed her eyes as tears ran down her cheeks. “This isn’t the first time I’ve had a dream like this.” She answered shaking her head. “I’m just scared, really scared.” She looked into Eric’s eyes. “Just hold me please. Hold me.” Amy said as she laid her head on his shoulder and hugged him tight.
“Who was after you?” He pressed her tighter into him, looking worried, “Is it someone you know in real life?”
Eric paused thinking about the conversation he’d had with Harry and David. There was so much they didn’t know about Amy, and so much they still had to find out. Why was she having nightmares about blood and attackers? It didn’t seem like the kind of thing this shy, quiet girl would think about, but then, he contemplated, things aren’t always as they seem.
“I don’t know who they are.” Amy said shaking her head. “I just wish the dreams would go away.” She sat there with her head on Eric’s shoulder and nuzzled in closer to him then closed her eyes. She felt safe there with him.
"Could you explain the dreams to me Amy? Maybe if you tell me what's wrong then we can sort through them and figure out why you're having them." Eric, smiled reassuringly at Amy, hoping they could sort through them, if not he might have to call in outside help and he's not sure exactly who to ask about that.
Amy seemed to be calming down a little so he released his grip a little bit, not too much though as Amy was still feeling vulnerable. "Do you think you could tell me?"
"Well, I'm in this house with some people, not sure who. Then someone kicks the door open. There is a lot of screaming. At first there is a woman is screaming my name, then they just turn to screams of horror as I hear gunshots, several of them. I hid under my bed." Amy shakes her head. "Blood, so much blood. It was all over the floor, it ran underneath the bed and got all over me. I tried to wipe it off, but there was to much." She says as she begins to cry again.
"Its just a dream you know?" Eric comforts, "Its not real and won't ever be real. There's nothing a dream can do to hurt you, no matter how disturbing." He paused a moment, stroking Amy's shoulder softly trying to reassure her, "Have you ever had the dream before... or is it a new occurrence?" He looks into Amy's eyes, trying to get her to calm down; trying to make her think logically despite the terrifying images rattling through her head.
"I...I've had them before. It's always the same dream and it keeps getting worse." She wipes tears from her eyes. "At first it was nothing really, but they keep getting worse. Every time I have that nightmare, there is more to it. I'm getting scared. She said as she looked at Eric.
"When... when did it start? Was there anything significant that set it off that you can think of?" He kissed the top of her head before running his hands through her thick dark hair.
"They started a few months ago, shortly before I came to Palace." Amy says as she closes her eyes.
“Ok Amy, that was great." He dropped his head, staring intently into her eyes, "I want you to promise me that if this happens again you tell me, or David straight away. Will you do that for me?"
"I...I will, I promise." Amy said looking at Eric. "Hold me. Please. Just for a few more minutes."
Eric smiled and moved his arms round Amy's waist again, "Of course I will." He stayed silent for a moment, giving Amy and himself time to adjust to the change in mood, enjoying an oddly comfortable silence. He didn't like having to have these conversations, but they were necessary. He was just pleased that Amy felt that she could come to him and tell him about these things; it meant a lot to him to have her trust and he didn't want to betray hers. Eric then spoke, trying to change the subject into something less daunting and potentially upsetting than the one before. "How are you finding Palace... have you made any friends yet?"
Amy raised her head and looked at him. "I've kept to myself mostly. I only know you and David. Oh, and that nice man Harry that brought me here." She gives Eric a half smile and kind shrugs, turning her head away. "I went for a walk in the garden earlier. It was pretty, but..." Her voice trails off. "I don't know anyone here really." She said as she looked back in to Eric's eyes.
"Oh Harry, have you had lessons with him yet?" he paused smiling softly, "You know, if you wanted I could introduce you to some people. Or if you'd rather wait that’s fine... whatever is best for you."
Amy smiled. "I really like Harry, but no. He's not given me any lessons." She wipes at her eyes again. "I would love to meet some of the people here. I get a little lonely sometimes."
"Well we'll put that on our to-do list shall we?" he grinned, eyes twinkling brightly as he spoke, "I'm sorry I haven't been here for you as much as I’d like to be... but if you ever need anything at all just knock on my door, or call me, or message me on your com like you did before, yeah?"
Amy smiles at him. He has very lovely eyes. She thinks to herself. "It's ok Eric, I know you are busy. I can't even to imagine everything that goes on here." She gives him a tight hug. "Thank you. I will contact you if I need anything."
"Thank you. Do you feel better now?" Eric's voice is full of concern again; "I hope so..."
"I do actually. I guess I just needed someone to talk to." She says as she rises from Eric's lap and stands in front of him. "Thank you. I'm sorry if I bothered you. I know you must find this entire nightmare problem silly. I mean, It's just bad dreams right?" She smiles, leans down and gives Eric a kiss on the cheek.
"People get scared Amy, and there's no shame in being frightened, about anything." He then stood up and kissed Amy on the cheek in return. "Well... I should go. I promised that I’d ring one of my friends from Sedat, but remember, if anything scares you, anything at all no matter how trivial you think it is... tell me ok?" He smiles as Amy nods, feeling warmth spread through his chest. "I'll come and see you soon... I promise, and we can go and meet some people."
Amy smiled at him. "Thank you again." She said as she opened the door for him. "I'll be looking forward to our next visit."
Eric stepped out of the doorway, saying his goodbyes to Amy before stepping out into the hallway. Being a Votary... he thought to himself, Its just like having a child. He pondered this thought as he walked slowly back to his room, hoping that Amy was ok. He hoped so he truly hoped so.
