“I have an appointment for you.” John told him and Sean gave him a puzzled look. Appointments came through the booking office and thus through reception, not through the chief administrator. But John had not finished speaking. “You don’t have to accept this one if you don’t want to. I need to make that clear, all right? It’s entirely up to you.”

“Uh, okay.” Sean tipped his head to one side, plainly curious now. “What kind of appointment comes through you, John?”

John looked up at the ceiling. “The kind that comes down from Palace-Proper.” he said solemnly.
